The Brussels Hoard: in 1908, workmen demolishing an old tavern in the centre of Brussels made an extraordinary discovery in a cistern hidden beneath the tiled kitchen floor - about 150,000 medieval silver coins, mainly sterling silver English pennies which had been buried around 1265AD. The Brussels Hoard holds the world record for being the largest hoard of buried coins ever discovered.
Long cross pennies: in 1247, English pennies were issued with a new anti-tampering design to make it easier to detect ‘clipping,’ the practice of illegally trimming metal from the edge of the coin. The new reverse featured a voided long cross which extended all the way to the edge.
