  • First performed in 1634, the Passionsspiele (Passion Play) is the result of a vow taken by the residents of the German city of Oberammergau, that if God were to spare them from the ravages of the bubonic plague, their appreciation would be shown through a performance of the passion every decade. It is now performed during the years ending in ‘0,’ but special performances were also produced for the 300th and 350th anniversaries, in 1934 and 1984, respectively. A unique experience, only residents of the city are allowed to participate, with nearly half of the residents being involved in its production.
