The medal commemorates the completion of the first part of the works by James Wyatt [Wyatville]. The Round Tower was raised, and other battlements added to enhance the castle’s silhouette. The King George IV Gateway was created to open onto the Long Walk. The King was able to take up residence in December 1828.
