  • an annotation in pencil on the front of the note says “To this - from Hawes 20th. Sept. 1883. NB ‘Richmond’ old plate worn out”. The implication being a new plate was required in 1883 as the old £5plate had worn out and this proof is the first impression from the replacement.
  • perhaps the bottom of the note was cut short intentionally so that the note could never be used as a £5.
